At Mach 3 the inlets made most of the thrust, and where their shock waves stood decided everything. An illustrative inlet you can unstart, a sourced dossier and a five-question challenge.

A wing that flies at Mach 2 does not lift from the same place it lifts from at 300 knots. How the crew moved about 20 tonnes of fuel to follow it, with the sources that say so.

U-2 / NASA ER-2

High-altitude research and atmospheric measurement, with the actual variants and their data kept distinct. NASA operates two ER-2s as flying laboratories from Armstrong's Building 703 in Palmdale, at 20,000 to 70,000 ft, "above 99 percent of the Earth's atmosphere" (NASA, ER-2 aircraft page, updated September 29, 2023). It joins the collection when it has enough verified content; until then there is nothing here to click, on purpose.

Documented backlog entry. No photograph is used; NASA's ER-2 imagery (credit NASA/Carla Thomas) would be reusable with credit when the exhibit exists.

THE RULES EVERY PAGE FOLLOWS

Depth over catalogue.

  • Interactive means working. A control on these pages does something end to end, or it is not there. Unfinished aircraft stay in the backlog with no link.
  • Every claim has a locator. Document, edition, page or section, and a link, in a sources drawer near the content, with a "suggest a correction" line.
  • Models say what they are. The SR-71 inlet and the Concorde diagram are illustrative, with their assumptions written down; the Systems Detective case and the Captain’s Call scenario are synthetic and frozen; the Lear model is original geometry from public drawings.
  • Identities stay separate. Lloyd's Lear 24XR is N24SA, serial 24-117; NASA's Learjet observatory is a different airplane; the Cherokee and Baron photographs are type photographs, not Lloyd's aircraft.
  • Records stay yours. Completions, answers and notes live in this browser, visible in My Hangar, exportable and deletable there.
